Museum of Igor Stravinsky

Welcome to the city of Ustyluh (Volyn region) where the first worldwide museum of Igor Stravinsky, a unique figure in the sphere of music of the 20th century, was opened! Works of the great composer has absorbed almost all major trends and styles of his era: peculiar refraction of Russian folklore in his early compositions, “architecture and music” constructions of neoclassical period, mystical atonality and dodecaphony of late creativity period. The force of impact, scale and significance for contemporaries and descendants of his work is compared with works of an artist Picasso.
Igor Stravinsky lived great 89 years: he was born in 1882 in accompaniment of intoxicating roar of waltzes by Johann Strauss and a year later after assassination of Alexander II the Liberator who had abolished serfdom. He died in 1971, outlived Gagarin and “Beatles” disintegration...
Personal life of the musician was rather bright and expressive too. A picturesque city of Ustyluh, that became a bulwark of three generations of the musician’s family, keeps many of secrets of his intimate life. The house, functioned as a museum now, was built by Stravinsky on his own project, similar to Swiss chalet. This is the place that he called a “corner of paradise for creativity”; this is the place where he brought his favorite piano «Bechstein» and felt better than in a mansion located in Hollywood and in the house situated on the shore of Lake Geneva.
Here you will learn about secret love of the composer presented “in black and white”: range of piano keys and dresses of incomparable Coco Chanel, who at difficult times endured by Stravinsky in Paris sheltered him and his wife sick with tuberculosis, and four children at her villa. Coco helped the composer in the ballet “The Rite of Spring” and that very year she created her perfume Chanel № 5. Their life paths crossed at a crucial time and gave an unexpected direction of culture history of the twentieth century: Stravinsky created a new approach to music and Chanel revolutionized women's fashion. The Russian composer and the French trendsetter passionately loved each other, carried the feeling throughout all their life and practically died on the same day: there was an icon gifted by Stravinsky to Coco near her bed. And there was nothing more except music and perfume...
